  • This intensive workshop takes place throughout three consecutive weekends in March: three weekends, 9 days and 72 hours with filmmaker, Gabriel Dettre.

  • The 10th day will be a joint celebration and screening, followed by a live performance, exhibition and a finissage. Time and Date are to be discussed.

  • The course will be taught in English

  • We will be working in small groups (1 director and 4 actors) focusing on all artistic and psychological aspects of directing and acting in films.

  • We will not be teaching the otherwise important technical aspects of film making (a basic knowledge of that is required of all participants).

  • A deep attention to our medium is desired in order to meet our goals that comes with quiet and peaceful observation and self-discipline. Even eating or drinking will be more tolerated and accepted during our long sessions than any electronics, including phones and computers!

  • We will not be going for the superficial, for the senselessly entertaining. For the most part, we will not be dealing with the “packaging” of the message we will be striving to convey (impressive technicalities, visual tricks, or any other attractive solutions which tend to increase the production value of a film) , but shall put great emphasis on its true content and meaning. A basic acceptance of all that is also required of all participants.

APPLICATION

Please, attach to your application a video recording of some samples of your previous work! It could be a professional or amateur footage, it could even be an improvised introduction, but it should show us your talent and inform us about your expectations concerning our workshop.

On the basis of the application material we will make our first selection and conduct informal personal conversations with all the selected applicants.

In their admission notification all selected directing students will be asked to prepare for a scene to be directed with chosen acting students in the First Session period. The scenes will have to be based upon a haiku (or a similarly short, terse, philosophical piece of writing, written by a classical author).

In their admission notification all selected acting students will be asked to prepare for a scene to be performed (alone or with other chosen actors) in the First Session period. The scenes will have to be based upon a classical painting, or a sculpture or a photograph.

.

All students will be asked to bring a hard copy of their chosen literary or art work to the First Session.

About

Filmmaking - in our reading  – is art. It is not only inevitably spiritual, but it also teaches and guides, hence it is part of the most noble and relevant professions one can imagine. It shapes our present and our future. And that outlines our responsibility as filmmakers.
Overpassing postmodernism, our paramount interest should not be about forms. We should deal with substance, decipher our own souls and pay close attention to the psychological needs of others.
Our focus is to teach:

  1. how to pay attention to each other
  2. how to open up to each other
  3. how to trust each other
  4. how to read each other
  5. how to respect each other
  6. how to serve each other's needs

…and all that while making art and being creative!
